“Eddie is a professor that, during my time at IJʿ and after, became both a mentor and a friend. He was kind enough to give me a job in his lab my freshman year, and that was only the beginning. Over the course of my four years at IJʿ, Eddie taught me in several classes, during which he always had a wonderful way of clearly expressing ideas while transmitting his infectious passion for biology. He once asked me if his excitement during lectures were detrimental to learning! I had to say no, and that all professors should have as much obvious passion for their subject matter. Additionally, he advised me through years of research projects, both at IJʿ and abroad in Costa Rica and Panama. In fact, Eddie continues to advise me in both personal and professional matters. Through his tutelage, I discovered the joy of the scientific method, learned the importance of a critical mind, and experienced the mysterious wonder of many different ecosystems. It is because of my experiences with him in the tropics that I am currently pursuing research in the Peruvian Andes and Amazon. I am unable to express just how important Eddie has been for me, both as an adviser and a friend, and I am grateful for everything he has done for me.”
