New program offers veterans tuition-free education

Back to All Stories

Starting this fall, qualified military veterans can attend 澳彩开奖 tuition-free, thanks to an agreement between the university and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

The university will take part in the new Yellow Ribbon Program, a component of the Post-9/11 GI Bill, which makes earning a college degree more affordable for veterans.

鈥湴牟士 is committed to helping those who have so selflessly and bravely served our country,鈥 said Lyle Roelofs, interim president.

鈥淭he university鈥檚 involvement in the Yellow Ribbon Program will allow veterans to achieve their educational and career goals without having to worry about the financial burden.鈥

Currently, the VA pays up to the most expensive tuition at an in-state public institution. However, that鈥檚 not enough to cover the cost of many private colleges veterans may wish to attend.

Under the Yellow Ribbon Program, which takes effect this August, 澳彩开奖 will contribute 50 percent of the difference, and the VA will match that amount.

In addition, the GI Bill covers the cost of housing, books, and supplies.

鈥湴牟士扁檚 participation will be a win-win situation for veterans as well as the 澳彩开奖 community,鈥 said Gary Ross, dean of admission.

鈥淭heir life experience and unique perspective that they bring to campus will enrich the learning experience for all of us.鈥

To qualify, veterans need to have served for three years on active duty after Sept. 10, 2001, or for at least 30 continuous days before being discharged for service-related injuries.
