Seniors Michael Barry and Valerie Boyd have been named this year’s recipients of the Schupf/Lorey Art Prize.
The art history majors each placed video installations in the 2011 Senior Studio Exhibition, and both drew high praise from the art prize selection committee: Paul Schupf ’58, Linn Underhill, director of the Picker Gallery, and Bob McVaugh, professor and chair of art and art history.
Barry’s project, “E.M.I.T. (Everything Matters Involving Time),” presents a mirrored landscape and invites the viewer to take a closer look at how time — with its shifting sunlight and flowing cloud cover — can change the way we perceive even the most immobile features of our environment.
Boyd brought her camera indoors, into a private interior, to explore the idea of religious reverie. She mixed audio from four different religious communities and allowed the soundtrack to dominate the movement onscreen.
Both pieces were completed under the direction of Professor John Knecht and are currently on display in Little Hall.
“After looking carefully at all entries, we came to the conclusion that the video works by Michael and Valerie are first-class and worthy additions to the Picker Art Gallery’s permanent collection,” said Schupf. “Both videos are fresh, original, and riveting.”
