Tommy Melgoza ’26: In the Field with FOX 32

Back to Career Services News

Tommy Melgoza ’26 spent his summer in the newsroom at FOX 32 Chicago, shadowing reporters, producers, and anchors while learning how daily TV media is made. The internship gave him exposure to each step of the newsmaking process, from writing scripts to translating television content for digital and social media platforms. Because audiences increasingly consume news online, Tommy saw how crucial it is to quickly convert and publish content for the constantly evolving media space.

Tommy also had the chance to do hands-on journalism himself. He traveled into the field and connected with the local community, documenting stories that bolstered the station’s reputation with residents. One focused on a flower shop that provided all the arrangements for the Democratic National Convention. The small local business employs underserved youth, offering creative expression and a steady income. “Projects like this helped me to understand the importance of broadcast journalism, not only within the media space but as a pillar of the local community working to raise the voices of those who drive it,” said Tommy.

After the internship concluded, Tommy reflected with gratitude on the opportunity to work closely with professionals and gain experience for a future in the industry. The kindness and encouragement of his ideas from colleagues helped Tommy feel comfortable and valued in the workplace. He credits the internship’s bi-weekly rotation structure for the chance to connect with staff in many different roles, including producer Perri Stewart and assignment editor Jocelyn Soto.

One of his biggest takeaways was the importance of being an efficient and effective communicator. “Whether I was helping write a script for the air or trying to think of clever ways to tease an upcoming segment, it was necessary to understand how to communicate creatively and concisely.” Tommy will take these communication skills with him as he continues to explore careers within the industry next summer.
