Costs and Aid for Off-Campus Study

The costs and financial aid opportunities related to off-campus study opportunities at 澳彩开奖 are designed so that studying off campus is an option for all students.

Program Costs

Select an off-campus study opportunity to learn more.

Participation in an extended study course will entail an additional program fee, billed along with regular 澳彩开奖 charges in the typical billing cycle. The fee covers program costs such as:

  • Travel
  • Housing
  • Field trips
  • Insurance
  • Other mandatory program-related charges

The program fee varies per program. The Office of Off-Campus Study publishes a cost estimate for each upcoming extended study, available below.

Extended Study Cost Estimates

澳彩开奖 has established a simple and effective method for students participating in approved off-campus study programs. Students will be invoiced regularly for 澳彩开奖 tuition, plus the cost of any room and board billed by the approved program provider. In rare instances, students will be billed for visa costs paid through the program provider.

澳彩开奖 will then pay the approved program provider on the student鈥檚 behalf.

Program fees vary per program. For planning purposes, the Office of Off-Campus Study publishes estimated approved program budgets with a breakdown of billable expenses.

Additional expenses

In addition to tuition and other charges billed by 澳彩开奖, students should anticipate additional out-of-pocket expenses when planning a budget for the semester, such as:

  • Meals not covered by board
  • Daily incidentals
  • Local transportation
  • Books
  • Vaccinations
  • Airfare
  • And more

Each program鈥檚 estimated budget or approved program cost estimate published by the Office of Off-Campus Study includes estimated out-of-pocket expenses. If estimates for the semester you will be away are not yet available, you may wish to check cost estimates for the previous year's program.

Estimated expenses do not include discretionary personal spending on travel, souvenirs, entertainment, etc. Students should carefully consider their own resources and spending habits 鈥 as well as the cost of living in the country where they will study 鈥 to finalize a realistic budget for the semester.

Bear in mind that when all expenses are considered, a semester of off-campus study may cost more than a semester at 澳彩开奖, especially in high cost-of-living countries.

Financial Aid

Students Currently Receiving Aid

Students who receive financial aid from 澳彩开奖 may receive additional financial assistance in order to meet the additional costs of off-campus study programs. This financial assistance is available for students to participate in:

  • One 澳彩开奖 study group or Approved Program
  • And one 澳彩开奖-directed extended study program

Financial aid for off-campus study is awarded on the same basis as when studying on campus. It is based on a student鈥檚 Estimated Family Contribution (EFC). A student鈥檚 EFC for the semester of off-campus study is the same as it would be for a semester studying on the 澳彩开奖 campus.

The financial aid award for a student participating in off-campus study will be adjusted in the following ways:

  • Any work-study award will be canceled for the semester of any semester-long program.
  • An additional loan of no more than $1,500 will be offered to help cover the extra cost of the program.
  • The 澳彩开奖 Grant, if applicable, will be increased to cover any remaining costs.

Note: Financial aid is available to seniors for extended study courses extending beyond the end of the spring semester. However, any seniors electing to participate in a spring extended study will be eligible to apply for participation in the May commencement ceremony, but will officially graduate at the next degree conferral date. Please refer to the student handbook Student Handbook for details on commencement participation.

Students Not Currently Receiving Aid

Students who are not currently receiving aid from 澳彩开奖 should consult the Office of Financial Aid to learn about their eligibility for loans to meet extra cost of off-campus study.

External Source of Funding

There are many external scholarships and grants are available for students interested in off-campus study. To take advantage of these opportunities, advance planning is critical.

Interested students should make an appointment to speak with an off-campus study adviser about these opportunities early in their sophomore year.

The Gilman Program is seeking applicants who are U.S. citizens and recipients of a Pell Grant. Students who have traditionally been underrepresented in education abroad are preferred. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents currently enrolled in a U.S. university or college. Application deadlines are in early November to study during the following academic year. This scholarship will be awarded to one student each year planning to study abroad in Mexico, Central America, South America, France, or Germany. The scholarship was established in memory of mothers Jane Gluckmann and Carol Rausch. Jane Gluckmann was a mom to her daughters Kerry and Missy and her 鈥渟ons鈥 Rodrigo (from Mexico) and Sergio (from Brasil), as well as others in need; she was most proud of her kids when they were empowered and living fearlessly. Born in France, Carol Rausch traveled Europe with a father and husband, who both served in the United States Air Force; she was first and foremost a loving mom of three children, and shared with them her enthusiasm for travel and passion for other cultures. May the inspirational spirit of these two mothers live on in future Fund for Education Abroad scholarship recipients who are curious about the world and seeking their own educational adventures.

The Killam Fellowships Program provides an opportunity for exceptional undergraduate students from universities in the United States to spend either one semester or a full academic year as an exchange student in Canada. Students may participate in the program as a self-placed visiting student (registering at the host university and paying host tuition fees).

The Killam Fellowships Program provides a cash award of $5,000 US per semester ($10,000 for a full academic year), and includes a three-day orientation in Ottawa, and a three-day spring seminar in Washington, D.C.. In addition, the foundation provides all American Killam Fellows with an allowance of $250 Cdn to offset the cost of health insurance. All Killam Fellows are also eligible to apply for a mobility (in-country travel) grant in an amount not to exceed $800 Cdn. The idea of the mobility initiative is to allow students to undertake an educational field trip, providing the Fellows with the opportunity to gain a fuller understanding of the culture in Canada. Killam alumni are also eligible to apply for various , such as the Fulbright Canada Alumni Internship Program, the Killam Community Action Initiative, and the Local Ambassador Program.

This program offers scholarships for fall and spring semesters. The program is open to U.S. citizen undergraduate students who wish to study outside of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Language study must be a component of the study-abroad program. The maximum award is $10,000 for a semester program. The NSEP Boren is administered on campus by the Office of National Scholarships and Fellowships. The deadline for contacting the Office of National Fellowships and Scholarships regarding your intent to apply is the first Friday in December.

LGBTQ students who are applying for a scholarship through the Fund for Education Abroad (see info below) may also choose to be considered for this award. FEA offers one scholarship per year to an LGBTQ student to take part in a high-quality, rigorous study-abroad program. The amount of the award for a semester program is up to $5,000. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents currently enrolled in a U.S. university or college. Application deadlines are in early November to study abroad during the following academic year or summer. Because the deadline date is so far in advance of the actual study semester, it is not necessary for applicants to have applied or been accepted to a study-abroad program to be considered.
